PREVIOUS FILMS ON PACIFIC ISLAND CANOES, NAVIGATION & VOYAGING
Since 1977, three films on Pacific Island canoes and voyaging have been produced, and have been shown nationally on public television:
The Voyage of Hokule'a. 1977. Produced by Dale Bell. National Geographic Society. 89 minutes.
The Navigators. 1983. Produced and Directed by Sanford Low. Documentary Educational Resources. 58 minutes.
The Last Navigators. 1989. Steven Thomas. 58 minutes.
In The Voyage of Hokule'a the National Geographic Society purported to document the 1976 voyage of Hokule'a to Tahiti. However, in their effort to capture what they felt was the "true story" of the project - conflict generated by crew members who wanted to take over the project from the organizers on the basis of Hawaiian rights - the film makers not only exacerbated that conflict, but utterly failed to inform viewers about how the canoe was actually sailed and navigated to Tahiti, and what the voyage contributed to our understanding of Polynesian voyaging, migration and other aspects of the culture.
In contrast, The Navigators is highly informative about Micronesian canoe sailing and navigation, and provides a moving portrait of Mau Piailug, the traditional Micronesian navigator who guided Hokule'a to Tahiti in 1976, and is now trying to preserve navigational knowledge and skills on his home island. However, despite the declared intention to also shed light on Polynesian migration and voyaging, and, toward that end, the use of footage of Hokule'a at sea, the film fails to come to grips with the relevant sailing and navigational problems and how the experimental voyages of Hokule'a shed light on these.
The Last Navigators focuses on Micronesian navigators from the island of Satawal, particularly on Mau Piailug and a voyage he made 500 miles north to the Mariannas Islands. This is a highly personalized account told from the point of view of the film maker that does not really touch on Polynesian migration and voyaging issues.
In contrast with the three films described above, Voyagers of Rediscovery will focus on how today's experimental voyaging research - combined with humanities scholarship - is resolving issues of Polynesian migration and voyagaing; and on how Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders have combined this experimental approach with their quest to rediscover their own heritage as oceanic explorers and colonizers. In so doing, our film will capture both the anthropological and cultural significance of these efforts.
